If you go, keep an eye out for my shoe. It is white and blue and I lost it back in 1986.

Thanks!

You guys are a riot...............
  I've heard of guys detecting the Apple River.... and they found some awesome finds but it's a lot of work I'm sure.
But good for you for checking it out and maybe thinking about giving it a try.
Hey, how about it... who all on here has tried detecting the Apple?  Why don't you start a New Topic and tell us:
  * What was it like:
  * What you found? (maybe a blue/white shoe?)
  * Lots & Lots O' trash or pretty clean?............ etc...

We need some good "cold-weather" topics on here, even
though the weather has been unbelievable(knock-on-wood

Went to apple river on Mon, it is still flowing, for those diehard enough to enter the water there are a few areas of entry. I had the intention of stopping in Stillwater that day and not driving to Sommerset, but I did not bring along my waders, so I just did a scouting mission. found a few areas of interest due to my experience in gold sleuthing in WA state. That I will probably pick up in the early spring or summer depending on flood waters. Right now is probably the best time if you can bare the cold water as it is low flow.

Jerry just as you come out of Sommerset and before you cross the river if you take a left it will lead you to a public park where the rapids are. There were ice sheets on the edge making it a bit precarious, and I would recommend highly that you travel with a bud when wading 32^ F waters but there are "cleaner" areas to enter right at the pull out section.  If you are a fly fisherman this should not be any different than normal access to a trout stream, but do be careful. I saw trailings and areas of interest the water 2 weeks ago ranged from 12-24inches, but this can change in an hours time given the warm weather lately. Please post finding if you find cool stuff, I doubt I will make it out there before spring, but best of luck.

just wondering but isnt it against the wisconsin dnr rules to treaure hunt in the waters of wisconsin.  Im pretty sure you can only be on the shore at this time.  The Four Lakes Club in madison are always fighting the wisconsin rules for this just thought you better check out the laws before you go in the water.

Mike Wolf, Steve Graham and i did the Apple a few years ago.  The current is very strong for using a metal detector.  We started down stream and went up against the current and just "eye balled" in out wet suits, goggles and snorkels.  We found lots of stuff but no gold. Millions of trash items.  Let me say that again... MILLIONS of trash items.  Swim suits, shoes, sun glasses, under ware, bras, panties, thongs, shirts, hats, pop and beer cans, boom boxes, towels, deflated inner tubes and millions of trash items too. I did find a few coins and a nice pair of Oakley sun glasses.  Have fun and wear good foot protection and a wet suit.  The water is cold.

The problem, at least when my dad & I thought of detecting there, is the grumpy village of Somerset. There was a sign in the village park that said you could not park there unless you rented an inner tube. Next to the village park a school with ballfield & no trespassing sign. I know WI like MN does not allow detecting in state parks. And most of the "parks" along the Apple River near Somerset are privately owned, so don't know about legal entry.

I don't know if states claim ownership of all rivers & if so do they claim ownership of all lakes since the state stocks them with fish? I know FL does not allow detecting underwater, at least in ocean. Best wishes, George in AV
