Whew - managed to get out in the sun, but it was a bit chilly from the breeze. I was going to go to a place a bit farther away, but my wife requested I stay closer to home and go to an old standby instead. Glad I listened!

I managed three wheats (29-D, 41-D, 46-D), one merc (1935), and my first ever Barber half! It wasn't down all that deep, but I think was on its side. Turned out to be an 1894 in pretty good shape. I'm just in awe I found something like that.

Hey, it looks like pics are working again! I'll have to round up some others from earlier...

HH,
DirtFlipper

Unusual Search

My name is Jeff Hasse and I am the Vice-President of Search, Rescue, and Recovery Resources of Minnesota. (http://www.srrrmn.org) We conduct missing person searches all around the state (and nation). I currently have seven active cases.

I am writing this group about a specific case--the search for Brandon Swanson. http://thesearchforbrandon.blogspot.com/. We believe we are close to completing this search, but are having some difficulties. The evidence suggests that his remains may have been tilled into a field. The Human Remains Detection dogs are telling us that there are definitely remains in the area, but we can't pinpoint them (too much scent).

You may be able to help close this case. I am looking for people who might be willing to contribute their treasure-hunting skills to search for clues to Brandon's remains. He was carrying a number of metalic items: keys, coins, belt buckle, glasses, zipper on his jeans, cell phone, etc. We believe that most, if not all, items were on him when he died. If our interpretation of the evidence is correct, these items might be spread out some in a tilled field.

The family has raised money to support the search and they should be able to reimburse reasonable expenses (principally gas). We have been staying at a local church during our search weekends.

Please let me know if you are interested in helping out. The next search date hasn't been firmed up yet, but we are hoping to get another search in before the holidays.

We are hoping to conclude this search soon so the family doesn't have to wait another winter for closure to this tragedy.

Thank You,

Jeff Hasse

A five silver hunt - 11.10.09

Couldn't stand staying inside with the nice weather out, so I found a way to get out to a park.

Managed five silvers - 2 Mercs and 3 Roosies (41,42,57,61,63). All were down several inches, and the area I was working had lots of roots, so recovery was challenging. Managed to scratch one Merc right across the front. Grrr.

Also managed eight Wheats - two singles, and two groups of three (mini spills I guess). A 1925 and 27, the rest late 30's/early 40's. Most have real crusty crud on them that doesn't want to come off too easily. Soil wasn't too nice to them I guess.

(still no room to upload pics - sorry).

HH,
DirtFlipper

Informal group hunt Sunday Nov. 1

Some of us are meeting to hunt the picnic grounds and woods at Columbia Park, NE Mpls at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. All are welcome to join us. The woods abut the park and a stretch of RR tracks. There is also a sledding hill on the back side of the golf course in the same area and a soccer field that has yielded a fair amount of clad in the past. Lots of area to explore. Also more woods abutting RR tracks across the street. We will meet in the parking lot on the north side of the park near the picnic area (west of Central Ave., just past 35th and the RR bridge).

Hope to see you there.
Last weekend's finds

Had some decent luck last time out. Two silvers (1943 Washington Quarter, 1904 Barber dime), one really chewed up Indian Head (1898), and three wheats (one was 1912). The Barber was the last target of the day (again). The Washington quarter was about the first target of the day and the Barber was about the last.
(I tried to upload pics, but the website says 'storage limit exceeded').

Hope everyone gets a chance to squeeze in a few more hunts in this season!

HH,
DirtFlipper

Wisconsin friends need our help.

I am posting here because I know a lot of you guys. I also made a post over on the Metal Detecting forum.

Archies in Wisconsin last fall closed off ALL lake and river bottoms to metal detecting, and all state land without any public meetings or input. They just decided to shut it all down. I wont go into their reasoning because it makes no sense to me.

I am Gene Scullion, president of the Four Lakes Metal Detector Club in Madison, WI, and our club decided to fight what they are doing. We have been paying a lot money to a lobbyist and we now have a bill ready to go to committee probably before the end of October. If successful, it will allow us to regain water and land sites, with some restrictions I am sure. We will need a lot of phone calls, emails and letters to state Representatives to get the majority on our side. When we are ready with the Bill, I will make another post with form letters and links to state reps.

How can you help if you live out of state? Tourism is big here in Wisconsin, so if you ever travel here on vacation and want to metal detect, or if you own vacation property here, contact the rep for that area and let him know your tourist dollars will go someplace else if this bill is not passed. If you have friends/relatives here, contact them and ask them to help. If you are not sure which representative to call, let me know and I will help you figure it out. Out of staters are more than welcome to respond to this.

What we need is you to simply state that you want them to support the bill. No need for blame or argument, we simply need you to show support for the bill. If you want to stress tourism dollars, that would be more than fine. Some offices have telephone recorders that are on 24 hours a day so even if you cant call during working hours, still make the effort. Simply leave a message with your name, what bill you want them to support, and maybe a brief message why. Thats all there is to it. The Representatives all have email as well, and again, you only need to state your desire to have them support the bill. These people are the ones we WANT ON OUR SIDE, so be polite and professional in your actions.

I will make another post once the Bill numbers have been assigned. We really need your help boys, I hope all of you can make an effort to get the word out to your friends/relatives or important prominent people. I would love the Representatives to be flooded with requests to support this bill. If you have friends and relatives in other states that visit you here in Wisconsin, contact them as well! Its time to get the word out, and get it out quickly!

Thanks boys. We gotta stick together on this. Results in Wisconsin, good or bad, could have significant effect on other states doing or considering the same actions. Make your voice heard, its time! If you would like more information, or have questions, feel free to contact me. Also feel free to copy this post and replicate it on other forums.

Scully
Gene Scullion
President, Four Lakes Metal Detector Club (Madison)
badgermd@tds.net
608-213-6622
